Food For The Mind
Good education provides nourishment for the developing mind. This nourishment has two essential aspects:
1. the knowledge content itself and
2. the way in which it is presented.
At Ficino School we believe that both are of great importance.
IN THE FIRST STAGE OF EDUCATION, up to the age of ten, we are careful that the content is both worthwhile and fundamental to learning in that subject area. We also endeavor to present this good material in a simple, attractive and systematic way. This means that the teacher leads the class's learning whilst being alert to the interests, needs and capacities of the individuals.
In short, the feeding and strengthening of mind, we find, comes through children learning the principles and facts for application, which widens as understanding deepens. In our experience this process is efficient and highly enjoyable.
IN THE SECOND STAGE OF EDUCATION, from 10 to 16, the children usually become much more aware of how others in the world think and relate to one another. This widening of interest is acknowledged in our curriculum with changes in both content and style of learning and enquiry. More information about the senior curriculum is available through the school. The following subject areas form the core of a Ficino Education. The Arts subjects are explained under the "Food for the Spirit" section of this website.
READING
Children are taught to read using a phonics system developed at St James School in London. Its content reflects the natural and simple life of a child. It also contains uplifting passages from literature and teachings from both western and eastern culture.
GRAMMAR
There is a thorough grounding in the grammar of the English language. The parts of speech are taught as well as the nature of a sentence.
HANDWRITING
This begins with straight lines and circles, leading to a calligraphic script. Children practise proportion and beauty in their handwriting. From about the age of eight they progress to a cursive script and experience the delights of their first fountain pen.
WRITTEN EXPRESSION
Taught systematically, learning to express ideas and observations in writing, begins with simple sentences, develops into fuller accounts of various types and matures over the years with the support of grammar and the inspiration of classical and good quality literature. From the earliest age children hear Shakespeare, myths and legends, stories from the Bible and other traditions. This greatly enriches their use and understanding of language.
MATHEMATICS
Mathematics forms the basis of all scientific knowledge and trains the mind to operate clearly and systematically. Our pupils begin learning their multiplication tables in the reception class and take to them easily. The traditional four rules of calculation are taught by heart in a systematic and lively way. The emphasis at Ficino School is on delight in the magic of numbers and the development of a strong base in numeracy.
NATURE STUDY / SCIENCE
This course is designed to encourage observation and also put back into science a sense of wonder and awe. It begins simply with the senses and the elements and then develops into study of plants, animals and the harmony of the universe. There are frequent outings, and a very practical approach is taken.
HISTORY
Children learn and copy most from real examples. The teaching of History is based upon the lives of great men and women. They undertake projects connected with their school outings to museums and historic places. People such as Sir Edmund Hillary, Florence Nightingale, Marie Curie and Churchill are studied. This encourages children to discover their own talents and to aspire to greatness themselves.
SANSKRIT LANGUAGE STUDIES
This is one of the oldest classical languages, and a specialty of our school. It has a wonderful system of sound and grammar, which gives the child an excellent base for the study of any language. Children love its order and beauty. |
